Faster product development
13 March 2006: Kennametal Widia India has been able to shrink production time and achieve better data integrity using a Wrench solution. Girish Vibhute provides an insiders view
We manufacture machinery for the automotive and defence industries, and deal with components of our different product lines. We were looking for a drawing management solution as we lacked a system that could effectively deal with documents relating to engineering drawings that were part of the manufacturing process.
A system was needed that could handle the process involved in the development of the machines and the drawings associated with the products. Different engineering drawings are constantly required for manufacturing new prototypes for New Product Development (NPD); also, a lot of existing drawings were reused for future product development. An efficient management of the engineering drawings is the key to faster NPD, reducing the lead-time to market.

A solution that saves time and money
13 February 2006: BHELs switchgear division at Bhopal is using Wrench, which has reduced manufacturing time and enabled the collaborative sharing of drawings. D K Dikshit, Senior Deputy General Manager, BHEL, Bhopal, explains the project in some detail
We specialise in the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and servicing of switchgear. BHEL has a wide spectrum of switchgears catering to applications such as power station auxiliaries, power distribution, process industries, rural electrification, opencast mines and electric traction in railways. These switchgears have many components attached to them. Managing the engineering designs of the switchgears and their components and the information pertaining to them can ensure faster manufacturing; hence that was our focus.
We were doing engineering drawings manually. They had to be created in a physical form. We needed to maintain their hard copies as they contained details on each assembly component of the product.

Tata Power shortens design cycle
21 November 2005: The Strategic Electronics Division of the Tata Power Company has been successful in improving co-ordination between its design and manufacturing teams by using Wrench PLM. Vinod Yadav, Deputy Manager of the division, recalls the implementation of the project.
The Strategic Electronics Division (SED) of the Tata Power Company focusses on the aerospace and defence market in India. The design and development centre of the company is located at Mumbai, and the manufacturing division is at Bangalore. There has to be proper co-ordination between the two teams to excel in whatever defence project we take up.

Re-engineering the PLM way
13 June 2005 : VA TECH WABAG has brought in the desired changes in its engineering design cycles by using Wrench PLM. V Venkatasamy, its Senior Manager, Quality & IT, and Coleridge Shelley, its Manager, Planning, share details about the deployment with Abhinav Singh
Being involved in planning, finance, putting up plants and after-sales service, we at VA TECH WABAG, an EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) company, were generating more than 1,200 engineering design documents during the design phase of turnkey projects. Our goal was to capitalise on our engineering assets and manage them in a comprehensive manner. Most of these documents pass through multiple internal groups staffed by engineers from several disciplines before being sent to customers for final approval. The customer pays for the documentation, which makes tracking and managing these documents a primary concern for us.

Powered by PLM 27 December 2004 :
Heavy machinery manufacturers are adopting PLM solutions
to reduce product design cycle time by sharing design-related
data. A report from Abhinav Singh Product Lifecycle
Management (PLM) solutions have brought about a complete
transformation at some of Indias heavy machinery
manufacturing giants.
Larsen and Toubros (L&T)
LTM business unit at Chennai manufactures heavy engineering
equipment used for tyre manufacturing; this equipment is exported
to Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Syria and Britain. Prior to
going in for a PLM solution, the unit had to use manual drawing
boards, making documentation a laborious task. Data retrieval used
to take up to three hours. There was no way by which data could be
shared, and in case any variations were required in the
engineering designs, making a change was tough, and it was
difficult to notify other departments at short notice.

Solutions boasts of an impressive customer list that includes the
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (ISRO Thiruvanantha-puram), BHEL, L&T,
ToyoDenki (Power Systems) and Sundaram Fastners. All are using its
flagship product, Wrench PLM (Product Lifecycle Management); CADD has
over 60 installations of Wrench across the country. The company
recently closed deals with Tata Power, Sanmar Engineering and Bajaj
Auto; the latter is expected to go live next month.
The
company, whose end-user has always been a designer in manufacturing,
is eyeing markets in the Asia-Pacific and Middle-East, and it

WRENCH helps BHEL trim product design cycle time
11 October 2004 : WRENCH PLM has helped BHEL reduce design
document movement time by 35 percent and cut advice processing time by
50 percent, a perfect example of how Indian product manufacturers can
bring products faster to market by reducing the time spent in
designing products.
Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Hardwar,
designs and manufactures a large number of products such as hydro, gas
and steam turbines, turbo generators, condensers and motors. Products
manufactured at BHEL's Hardwar unit are mostly engineered-to-order.
Implementing WRENCH PLM from Cadd Solutions helped BHEL cut down
product design cycle time, and in improving its change advice system,
thereby bringing out products faster to market.
